Pogonip

pogonip \POG-uh-nip\, noun:

An ice fog that forms in the mountain valleys of the western U.S.

Pogonip originates as a word of the Shoshone people, paγɨnappɨh, “thunder-fog.”

“When I was your age,” my 80 year old father used to say, “I walked fifteen minutes every day to get to school. It wasn’t uphill, and I wasn’t barefoot, but that goddamned pogonip sure made it feel like I was walking naked through the goddamned Antarctic every time.”
